If you’ve never seen House, Nobuhiko Obayashi’s 1977 haunted house film, do yourself a favor and just go watch it. As if chronic sleep deprivation isn't scary enough, this 1999 film follows three insomniacs who agree to sleep in a haunted mansion as part of a sleep study. Released in 1980, The Changeling was too late to capitalize on the freaky child trend epitomized by The Exorcist and The Omen and underperformed at the box office. However, in the decades since, this story of composer John Russell (George C. Scott) being haunted by the ghost of a disabled young boy has rightfully earned cult status. It’s a hauntingly gradual crawl, deftly directed by Peter Medak and with an ever-charismatic star at its center. Famously, producer Charles Brackett wanted Alfred Hitchcock to direct The Uninvited, but the Master Of Suspense was unavailable.

Bayona’s The Orphanage, a haunted house narrative that features, among other things, the unforgettable specter of a little boy in a cloth mask. Over the course of its runtime, The Orphanage packs in loads of other scares, both otherworldly and existential, cementing its place as one of the best horror films of the last 25 years. Horror icon Guillermo del Toro makes an uncredited cameo in the film, playing a doctor. Richard Matheson’s novel Hell House is a masterclass in pure, straightforward haunted house terror, and John Hough’s film adaptation delivers all that and more. The film follows a group of experts as they head into the title house with the goal of finding proof of the supernatural.

If you’re bored of the standard haunted house repertoire (creaky doors, smashed religious icons, bleeding walls, etc., etc.), you could do worse than check out Hausu. William Castle’s 13 Ghosts is also relatively light on scares, but it’s so incredibly charming you won’t mind. The haunted house in this one was left to the Zorba family by their occult-loving uncle, and came fully furnished – with 12 ghosts. Irena isn't Casper, but she certainly is a friendly ghost, and she still haunts her husband Oliver Reed (Kent Smith) and his new wife, Alice (Jane Randolph). However, Irena only allows Oliver and Alice's daughter, Amy (Ann Carter), to see her when the Reeds' lonely child wishes for a friend. Project Dorothy is a sci-fi/crime thriller that follows two criminals who hide from pursuing police in what appears to be an abandoned warehouse, but is really a scientific facility that houses a dangerous artificial intelligence.
As with so many haunted house movies, Insidious begins with a young family moving into a new home. Before the 2018 Netflix drama series, The Haunting was one of the best haunted house movies based on Shirley Jackson’s book The Haunting Of Hill House. Not only is Beetlejuice more comedy than horror, but the film flips the classic haunting story on its head.
Put it in a horror movie, especially in a horror movie where the stop motion is combined with live action, and you have the makings of a visually enthralling and totally unsettling film. Ella struggles with self confidence and her creative side, and when inspiration comes to her in the form of a young girl living in the same apartment building, Ella’s work begins to take over her life and mind. God bless ‘em for it, with special praise for the likes of Peter Jackson and Jason Lei Howden. Housebound is an exceptionally funny, dark, and insightful character study, featuring a wonderful performance by Morgana O’Reilly as a young girl named Kylie. It just happens to also run that story neck and neck with a story about a house that may or may not be haunted.
